Suspects Handcuffed, Hauled Away On DDOT Bus Following Raid At East Side Party; 175 Tickets Issued
DETROIT (WWJ) - Several people have been taken into custody following a police raid at a birthday party on Detroit's east side.
The incident unfolded Saturday morning along Gratiot Avenue near Park Grove Street, just south of 7 Mile Road.
What led police to the property wasn't immediately clear but in the end, a dozen people were handcuffed, placed on a DDOT bus and hauled off to jail. Police also confiscated seven guns, seized a "large quantity" of heroin and cocaine, impounded three vehicles, and issued 175 tickets for various offenses including furnishing liquor after hours, and for traffic warrants and narcotics.
Ron Moore, who just turned 22-years-old, told WWJ's Laura Bonnell things were peaceful until police showed up apparently looking for trouble.
"I don't know if it was a raid or they was just wanting to find something, but we was just having fun. They just came in there and just got to throwing us around. We was in handcuffs and they still was throwing us around," Moore said. "We was like 'Come on now, is it that serious?' and they still was throwing us around. We didn't have no drugs, no weapons, no nothing. Just alcohol. They just did all this force for nothing."
Police haven't yet said why the group was apprehended, but Moore said officers were giving them any reason in the book.
"Ain't nobody even did nothing but party," he said. "They talking about y'all got traffic warrants and we're taking y'all. I don't know what everybody was going in for but they just started taking people to jail. They pulled a DDOT bus over here and started putting everybody on the DDOT bus, like what's going on?"
An investigation is ongoing.
