Stoney's Blog: Pistons Need New On And Off Court Leadership For Rudderless Franchise

The circus that is the Detroit Pistons is one of the most disgusting things I have seen in my almost 25 years covering the Detroit sports scene. How dare players, who have underachieved, decide not to show up for a shoot around and undermine their coach? Don't get me wrong John Kuester is not a good head coach. His communication skills not to mention his coaching acumen in late game situations are below average at best, but showing up a coach and disgracing the franchise is unacceptable. It's time for the Pistons to rid themselves of the Prince, Wallace and Hamilton trifecta. These guys are not the leaders we were led to believe. Once the new ownership takes over both John Kuester and Joe Dumars need to be replaced.

Dumars acquired the talent or lack thereof and he also hired the coach. Dumars deserves tons of credit for building this team from the ashes to the mountain top. He was indeed the best in the business and rightfully gets the adulation that comes with that. However, he is also mostly responsible for the decline. Since the signing of Antonio McDyess before the 2005 season what exactly has Dumars done that would make you say wow.Ok, finding Jonas Jerebko in the 2nd round of the 2009 draft was nice, but drafting DaJuan Summers instead of DeJuan Blair is indefensible. The money shelled out for Ben Gordon and Charlie V and contract extensions for Jason Maxiell and especially Richard Hamilton were terrible. Plus his last two coaching hires were Millenesque and I am not even going to mention drafting gaffes prior to the last five years.

Joe needed to step up and be the stern leader of the organization in this time of chaos. He has publicly failed to do that. It almost appears that for whatever reason he is disinterested. Considering the flux the ownership has been in I would not blame him if he walked away from this mess, but he is too proud for that. It is unfortunate that the fire that once burned deep inside Joe Dumars seems to be extinguished and sadly his reign as Pistons General Manager should be put out as well.
