Two Southgate police officers shot; suspect taken into custody
A suspect who was wanted in connection with the shooting of two Southgate, Michigan, police officers on Thursday was taken into custody hours later.
According to the police, the officers were taken to the hospital after they were shot in the leg at an apartment complex. Authorities say the officers are in stable condition.
The suspect is identified as 20-year-old Jeremiah Christian Kemp. Director of Public Safety Joseph Marsh says Kemp was found hiding in a nearby apartment. Marsh says they are still looking for the weapon involved and plan to execute a search warrant of the apartment where he was found.
Police say a shelter-in-place has been lifted.
An alert from the police department says that officers responded to the area of Northline and Devoe at the Village On The Park Apartments for a call about a man with a gun. Southgate police say when they arrived, the suspect allegedly shot the officers.
Michigan State Police is assisting in the investigation.
Southgate Mayor Joseph Kuspa issued the following statement:
"This is a sad and tragic incident for our community. After visiting our wounded officers in the hospital with our Public Safety Director, Joe Marsh, I am extremely thankful that they are both stable and doing well considering the circumstances. Please keep them and their families in your prayers for a full recovery. Our focus now is on apprehending the suspect. I appreciate all of the assistance we are receiving from other local agencies, Wayne County and the State of Michigan. Additionally, I want to thank the news media for sharing the photo of the suspect and hope that it leads to a swift and safe apprehension."
