Scherzer's Injury Causes Changes In Rotation
Max Scherzer, one of the few starters who's shown any sturdiness for Detroit lately, will miss his start Tuesday due to a tight hamstring, triggering a flurry of roster moves by the win-one, lose-one Tigers.
Detroit is optioning out reliever Luis Marte, who pitched 1 2/3 innings of Detroit's 6-4 loss Monday to Minnesota, along with infielder Danny Worth.
"We're going to recall Jose Ortega from (Class AAA) Toledo," GM Dave Dombrowski said, "and purchase the contract of (lefty) Darin Downs."
To make room for Downs on the 40-man roster, Dombrowski said Detroit was going to designate for assignment a minor leaguer who had not yet been informed of the decision.
Taking Scherzer's place Tuesday against Minnesota is lefty Duane Below, who pitched 2 2/3 innings and threw 41 pitches on June 27. The Twins have a lot of left-handed hitters.
