Residents Rally To Save Troy Library
TROY (WWJ) - Concerned citizens in Troy are rallying Monday evening, demanding that their public library remain open.
Rally organizer and mother of three, Jennifer Hilzinger, said the library is a very important community resource.
"It's the heart of a community. It sends a signal that we care about literacy, we care about learning," Hilzinger told WWJ Newsradio 950.
"It's a place for us to gather. It's a place for kids to come together to study for exams. It's a place for people who are underemployed or who need to be reemployed -- it's a place for them to look for work. It's a place to learn English," she said.
Hilzinger was joined by a number of other Troy residents who are hoping to convince City Council members to keep the library open through the summer months until a millage vote can be held.
The rally began at 5 p.m. in front of the library in the city complex on Big Beaver Road. City Council begins its public meeting at 8:30 p.m.
Meantime, in Romulus, officials plan to reopen the library for at least one day a week beginning May 18. The Romulus library closed May 1st after voters overwhelmingly rejected a millage that would have been used to fund the library, parks and several senior programs.
