Report Examines State Of Nursing Home Care In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - One Detroit nursing home closes each year. That's among the findings of a new report out this week by the The Detroit Area Agency on Aging.

WWJ Newsradio 950's Pat Sweeting spoke with President and CEO Paul Bridgewater who said he's very concerned about the state of longterm care and the facilities providing such services in Detroit.

Bridgewater said there's been no newly constructed nursing home in Detroit since 1968.

"As a result of older buildings, they get cited more frequently than other facilities in the state of Michigan," he said.

The report also shows that three of out five nursing homes from Detroit end up going to the suburbs. There are roughly about 37 nursing homes currently open in the city.
