Remembering Jack: Public Memorial Service
TROY (WWJ/AP) - Remembering Jack. The man who helped shape the way our society views death will have a memorial service.
There is room for a few hundred people at a memorial service for assisted-suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian. The service takes place at 9:30 Friday morning at White Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Troy.
Mayer Morganroth, Kevorkian's friend and attorney, said they originally initially rejected the notion of a public remembrance, but after an outpouring of requests and support from around the world, they decided to have one.
A small, private memorial will take place later.
The 83-year-old Kevorkian died last Friday at Beaumont Hospital, where he was being treated for pneumonia and kidney problems. Morganroth said there could be six speakers at the service.
Kevorkian has said he assisted in about 130 deaths. He was an advocate of allowing people to die with the help of health care professionals. He served eight years in prison for second-degree murder after "60 Minutes" broadcast a video of him helping a man die in 1998.
