Pedestrian Fatally Struck By Vehicle Along Busy Road In Romulus

ROMULUS (WWJ) - Police are investigating after a pedestrian was found dead along a well-traveled road in Romulus.

The incident unfolded around 4:50 a.m. Friday along Ecorse Road, between Merriman and Middle Belt roads.

Police say a 58-year-old Romulus woman was walking along the road when she was struck by an eastbound-traveling vehicle. The driver stopped briefly after the collision, police said, and then left the scene.

Other circumstances surrounding the accident weren't immediately clear. The woman was laying face down underneath a sheet near Ball Road when WWJ reporter Mike Campbell arrived on the scene.

Police believe the vehicle that struck the woman is a dark-colored SUV, possibly a Jeep. The vehicle is expected to have front-end damage.

Sheila Brightner, who lives near the accident scene, said the intersection is busy during all hours of the day, and it's not just vehicle traffic.

"There's apartments that are just on the other side of Merriman, and I think some people walk from there sometimes," she said.

Ecorse Road was closed for several hours as police investigated at the scene, but has since reopened to traffic.

Anyone who might have witnessed the accident or who has any other information is urged to contact police at 734-941-8400.
