Ohio State Football Coach Resigns
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ)- University of Michigan fans may be rejoicing as word spreads that Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel has resigned amid NCAA investigation for possible rules violations.
The university announced the resignation Monday. Tressel says in a statement that he met with university officials and agreed that it is in Ohio State's best interest that he resign.
"What this does is affirm much of the rumor we have heard," Doug Karsch from 97.1 The Ticket said Monday. "Much of what has been reported and disputed probably is true."
Tressel lost only one game to Michigan in his 10 years as head coach. In 2003, Michigan beat Ohio State 35-21.
Tressel won a national championship in 2002.
Ohio State says Luke Fickell, an assistant head coach under Tressel, will serve as interim head coach for the 2011-2012 season. WWJ's Tony Ortiz reports rumored candidates to replace Tressel include former Florida coach Urban Meyer.
University President E. Gordon Gee says the university's "public purposes" and "tradition of excellence" are guiding its actions.
