Officials Investigating Livonia Carnival Ride Accident

LIVONIA (WWJ) - State inspectors are expecting a report from the operator of a carnival ride called the 'Fighter' that broke apart at the annual Livonia Spree carnival, located near Farmington Road and Lyndon.

A 36-year-old woman at the Spree was injured Tuesday night after a light fixture from the ride came loose and hit her.  She was taken to St. Mary's Hospital for treatment according to the Livonia Fire Department.  No one on the ride was hurt.

Livonia Mayor Jack Kirksey said all of the carnival rides, including the one involved in this incident, had been inspected by the state before the start of the festival Tuesday.

"All of the rides that are there at Spree 61 are currently being reevaluated to make sure there are no other lapses that would have created this kind of problem," said Kirksey. "Any rides that have not been inspected will remain closed."

Officials said the event will continue as planned through Sunday, but the ride will remain closed until inspectors figure out what happened.

The Livonia Spree celebrates the anniversary of the city's founding.
