No Summer Shutdown For GM Plants
Thousands of General Motors workers won't be going on summer vacation during the automaker's traditional shutdown.
The Detroit-based automaker announced Thursday that nine assembly plants will continue to operate from June 28th to July 9th because of high demand for Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac cars, crossovers, and trucks.
Four of the plants are in Michigan including the Detroit Hamtramck, Flint, Delta Township and Lansing Grand River factories. Other plants staying open are: Arlington, TX; Bowling Green, KY; Fairfax, KS; Fort Wayne, IN; and Wentzville, MO.
Most of GM's U.S. stamping and powertrain plants will also work to support assembly operations.
The decision to stay open is expected to generate up to 56,000 additional vehicles, according to GM.
"This move will help buyers waiting for high-demand products such as the Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia," said Mark Reuss, president of GM North America, in a statement. "Our manufacturing teams are taking creative approaches to increase production and reduce the wait times for our dealers and customers."
The summer shutdowns had been used in the past to give automakers time to complete the annual model changeover while having workers use their vacation time without interrupting production.
