New Century Career Center Launches Geothermal Training

The New Century Career Center L3C will be offering its first geothermal ground source heat training course in Dearborn Heights Feb. 14-16.

Training will be offered to a variety of contractors who will be preparing to bid on upcoming geothermal projects expected to launch in early 2011 as a component of the installation of municipal geo-utilities offering geothermal heating and cooling to the citizens of Dearborn Heights, Michigan.

The Geothermal Installer Training is the culmination of over a year of effort, involving close coordination with Wyandotte, Dearborn Heights, Hardin Geothermal and other companies that have been working to create a municipal utility that employs geothermal ground source heat as the basis for a citywide source of renewable energy, enabling the city to generate clean, cheap, locally-sourced energy for the benefit of its municipal operations, businesses and residents.

New Century Career Center will be offering the initial course to well drillers, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing contractors, and excavators to enable them to acquire the necessary knowledge to bid on a geothermal ground source heat project and to work on the job site after the bid is awarded.

"We have been researching the marketplace for almost two years to find suitable training to match the requirements for a geoutility installation, and couldn't find anything that exactly matched the needs of those communities we are working with and future communities," said school director Jeremy Eckhous. "With the unique demands the Hardin Geothermal processes place on the contractors, especially with regard to proprietary processes and equipment, we felt that we would do better to create an initial course that was specific to the emerging and future standards of the industry."

New Century Career Center L3C (NC3) is a Low Profit Limited Liability Company devoted to developing and offering vocational and technical training in the renewable and alternative energy sector. NC3 currently is applying to the State of Michigan for Proprietary School status, which will enable NC3 to participate in a wide range of vocational education opportunities, workforce development initiatives, and private training assignments.

In addition to offering geothermal training targeting contractors in the construction trades, New Century Career Center L3C is developing a wide-ranging renewable energy curriculum that will include an introduction to geothermal technology, courses in photovoltaic and passive solar technology and installation, energy audits, and weatherization and insulation courses.
