Motorcyclist Thrown Off Bike, Killed On I-696

OAK PARK (WWJ) - A 36-year-old Ferndale man was killed in a motorcycle accident on I-696 early Sunday morning.

Police say the accident happened just before 2 a.m. on eastbound I-696 at Greenfield Road.

Reports say the man missed the exit for Greenfield Road and attempted to cut across the paved gore which included rumble strips. That's when he lost control and both he and his female passenger were thrown off the bike.

Police say the man, who was not wearing a helmet, struck his head against the road before sliding about 45 feet. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The female passenger, who was wearing a helmet, also slid along the pavement and sustained abrasions and bruises, police said. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police say its unclear if alcohol or speed played a role in the crash. An investigation is ongoing.
