CBS DETROIT - Sports stories go viral for any number of reasons, and the most popular ones on CBS Detroit in 2014 ran the gamut from serious to sad to comical.
Receiving the most attention this year was the story on how some people on Twitter reacted with racist comments to the game-winning goal of Montreal Canadien P.K. Subban.
Next in popularity was the rant of Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, a noted perfectionist who used his postgame press conference to blast the stadium scoreboard operator.
One of the most touching local stories of this year ended sadly, with the death of young Lacey Holsworth, a girl who became close friends with Michigan State basketball star Adreian Payne.
Many sports fans enjoy a good trash talk story, and Michael Jordan is the king of that genre. Evidently, not even the president of the United States is exempt; Jordan called him out on his golf game.
A story that dominated headlines nationally for weeks revolved around Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling, who was recorded by his mistress talking in a demeaning manner about minorities. He was eventually forced to sell the team, but many wondered if it would happen because other owners would not want their secrets to be exposed as well.
