Michigan State Police Issue 314 Tickets, 202 Warnings On I-275 In Just 8 Hours; 'We're Coming Back Every Week'

LIVONIA (WWJ) - Hundreds of drivers were stopped and ticketed along I-275 in what police say was a special effort to crackdown on speeding and other reckless driving.

Michigan State Police say the special enforcement happened on Thursday near the 8 Mile Road exit in the city of Livonia. Police specifically targeted this area after receiving numerous complaints of high-speed and aggressive driving.

During an eight-hour period, more than a dozen motorcycle troopers detained a total of 300 drivers -- issuing 314 tickets for speeding, seatbelt use and other moving offenses. Troopers also issued 202 "verbal warnings" and made five arrests.

Police said motorists who drive I-275 should get used to seeing more officers on the road. Lt. Mike Shaw said troopers plan to carry out similar efforts "every week" on a different section of the freeway.

Shaw said ticketing drivers is not about making money, but about enforcing the proper traffic laws that keep all motorists safe.
