Suspect found dead after barricaded situation on Detroit's west side, police say
A barricaded situation on Detroit's west side ended with officers finding the fugitive dead inside the home, Michigan State Police said.
The scene on Wednesday in the 19900 block of Westbrook Street involved a suspect who was wanted on a 28-count drug warrant and had not appeared in court. Lt. Ty Howard said the fugitive team went to execute a search at the Westbrook home and heard a gunshot from the back of the house. Howard says the team then called for backup.
Howard confirmed that MSP and U.S. Marshals were able to get into the home. At first, they did not find anyone inside.
Shortly after 6 a.m. on Thursday, state police said the suspect was found inside "with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound."
The Michigan State Police teams on scene included its Emergency Support Team, the bomb squad, hostage negotiators, aviation unit and motor unit. State police said troopers did not fire their weapons during the incident.
"It's a bad situation, and we need to keep our cities and our streets safe," said Chandra Scott, whose mother lives in the neighborhood.
