Michigan Man Executed In Texas
(Huntsville, Tx-WWJ) A man who grew up in Livonia and quit school in the 11th grade has been executed by the state of Texas for his role in a gruesome double murder a decade ago.
As he was given a lethal injection Tuesday night, 31 year-old Steven Michael Woods told witnesses, "You're not about to witness an execution, you're about to witness a murder. I've never killed anybody."
Woods, described by authorities as a drifer and drug dealer, admitted being present when a man and a woman were shot to death and had their throats slashed on a Dallas-area golf course in May, 2001, but he insisted another man did it.
That man, Marcus Rhodes, who bought drugs from Woods, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison. Woods went to trial, was found guilty and sentenced to die.
Hours before he was executed, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected an appeal from Woods' attorneys.
