Mich. Lawmakers Stalled On State Budget Fix
Michigan lawmakers are still searching for a final plan to erase a $300 million state deficit for the current fiscal year.
Democratic House Speaker Andy Dillon said Wednesday he opposes using a projected surplus in the state's K-12 school fund to cover the current shortfall in the state's general fund, which pays for many other programs.
Republicans who control the Senate have proposed using part of the school fund surplus for education-related programs in the general fund.
The general fund likely has a deficit of $300 million or more.
Some Democrats suggest selling part of the state's future share of tobacco settlement revenues to help shore up the budget for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30. Republicans oppose that plan.
