Mayor Bing Declares Sunday Nelson Mandela Day In Detroit
DETRIOT (WWJ) - As declared by Mayor Dave Bing Sunday will officially be called Nelson Mandela Day in Detroit.
During a Tuesday news conference Bing acknowledged the contribution of Mandela and said, "In honor of his memory and in remembrance of his life, I'm officially declaring this Sunday as Nelson Mandela Day in Detroit."
Bing was joined by NAACP Detroit Chapter President Reverend Wendell Anthony, who is one of the lead organizers of the tribute.
"Nobody can say you are not invited because you are," said Anthony. "You are invited, everyone is - it's free and open to the public."
There will be speeches, dancing and singing including a special performance by a South African children's choir at the celebration on Sunday to honor the former South African President.
The free event begins at 3 p.m. at Detroit Music Hall- at the Music Center for Performing Arts. While it is a free event you must get have a ticket. Tickets are available at the Ticketmaster box office or online without a surcharge.
Mandela died on Thursday at the age of 95.
