M-DOT Begins Pilot Program Aimed At Reducing Traffic Fatalities
DETROIT (WWJ) - The Michigan Department of Transportation is participating in a nine-state pilot program aimed at reducing the number of fatal traffic accidents.
The fixed electronic message boards, which normally show highway obstructions and travel times, instead telling drivers this past week that hundreds of people died in crashed on state roadways over the past year.
M-DOT Spokesman Rob Morosi says the effort is meant to drive home and important point.
"You've seen anti-drunk driving, you've seen anti-texting, you've seen 'don't talk when you are driving' campaigns, this is just another tool in that toolbox," said Morosi.
Morosi says if the airline industry experienced as many deaths as there are on the roadways, 35,000 a year, airlines would be shut down.
