Local Power Workers Head South To Aid Tornado Victims

DETROIT (WWJ) -  A group of union power workers took a big-rig and truck down south on Saturday to help victims of the recent rash of tornadoes.

IBEW Local 17's Spokesman Kevin Shaffer says his lineman were dispatched to Birmingham and Tallahassee, and when they couldn't shake the images they saw there, they knew they had to do something.

"It was an opportunity for us to show that not only are we out there restoring power but we can do what we can to help people restore their lives," says Shaffer.

Shaffer says he's asking the community to drop off non perishables supplies to the IBEW Union Headquarters in Southfield.

Soon, Shaffer says, they'll take a truck down to help the flood victims.
