Livingston County Township Scraps Fluoride For Water

HARTLAND TWP. (WWJ/AP) - A Livingston County community has decided that it will no longer fluoridate its drinking water supply.

The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell reports the Board of Trustees for Hartland Township voted 5-2 Tuesday to immediately stop adding fluoride to its water following a two-month debate.

Trustee Glenn Harper brought the issue to the board. He called it a health hazard and says people should decide individually whether to use it.

Trustee Joe Colaianne voted against ceasing fluoridation, noting medical professionals promote its use in fighting tooth decay.

The federal government has long called fluoridation one of the greatest public health achievements of the 20th century. Earlier this year, however, the government said a fresh review suggested some Americans may be getting too much fluoride.

Last spring, Mount Clemens also stopped fluoridation to reduce the cost of water.
