Leyland: Never Saw A Call Like One During Toronto Game
DETROIT (AP) - Tigers manager Jim Leyland says he's never seen a play like Monday's call at first base, which led to his first ejection of the year.
Leyland was tossed during an animated argument after first-base umpire Ed Rapuano called Detroit's Andy Dirks safe at first. Rapuano then conferred with plate umpire Alfonso Marquez, reversed himself and called Dirks out. Replays showed Dirks was clearly out.
Leyland said Tuesday he has never seen a reversal like that on a play at first after a groundball.
The Detroit manager did say that Rapuano is "one of the best umpires in baseball" and "one of the great guys."
The Tigers beat Toronto 4-2 on Monday. They lost to the New York Mets 14-3 on Tuesday night.
