Leyland Gives Clubhouse Pep Talk After Latest Loss
Jim Leyland isn't big on clubhouse meetings -- "That rah-rah stuff doesn't work in the majors" -- but he held a brief one after Tuesday night's loss to challenge his club to get out of the doldrums.
"This is a critical time for us," he said he told them. "We can go in a corner, or we can come out swinging. If we come out swinging, well, we've got a chance. If not, we're going to be more vulnerable."
Leyland said the meeting was no more than a couple of minutes, and he stressed that players should not be feeling sorry for themselves just because of a few injuries.
The Tigers have three key players on the disabled list -- Doug Fister, Austin Jackson and Andy Dirks -- with Alex Avila and Gerald Laird fighting through tight right hamstrings. Don Kelly was sick Tuesday, and Joaquin Benoit suffered from a strained right forearm during the weekend.
