Jury Convicts Man In Crash That Killed Police Sergeant

HOWELL, Mich. (AP) - A man has been ordered to spend 15 to 30 years in prison for the traffic death of a Hamburg Township police sergeant.

The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell reports that 55-year-old Steven Mark Kelty of Oceola Township was sentenced Thursday.

Sgt. James Sanderson was killed in Genoa Township on Sept. 26, 2014.

Witnesses said Sanderson was thrown from his motorcycle in the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Sanderson had been a member of the police department since 1994.

A jury convicted Kelty in April of operating a vehicle on a suspended license and under the presence of marijuana causing death.

The newspaper says Kelty had six prior drunken driving convictions dating back to 1982.
