Insurance Scam Has About 1000 Detroiters Driving Without Insurance

DETROIT (WWJ) - An insurance scam has left many Detroiters driving without auto insurance.

WWJ Newsradio 950's Beth Fisher reports that it's a scam that's been going on for the past couple of months, according to Jason Moon with the State  Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation.

"Ethos insurance agency as well as an individual named, Don Diamond, were selling bogus auto policies purporting to have coverage through legitimate insurance companies, so we want to get the word out to Detroit drivers who may have bought these policies that they are driving without insurance, and they need to get legitimate coverage immediately," says Moon.

Moon says they believe there may be up to one thousand Detroiters who have bought these bogus policies, lured in by low prices.  He says it's best to make sure an insurance agent has a license.

Drivers are urged to contact OFIR toll-free at 877-999-6442 if they believe they may have bought a fraudulent policy from Ethos or Diamond. OFIR can also help consumers in determining whether they have proper auto coverage.
