Hundreds Of Schools Closed As Metro Detroit Blasted With Snow

DETROIT (WWJ) - Thousands of kids in southeast Michigan have the day off Thursday as snow from a winter storm continues to fall for a second day.

All public schools in Oakland, Washtenaw, Livingston, St. Clair, Lapeer and Sanilac counties are closed. In Wayne County, all public schools except for Grosse Pointe are closed. In Macomb County, all but Lakeview are closed.

Several colleges and universities are also closed for the day, including Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo College, Ferris State, University of Michigan's Flint campus, and Delta College. Central Michigan University is delaying classes until 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Thursday for Lenawee, Monroe, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 a.m. Thursday for Livingston, Macomb, Oakland and St. Clair counties.

Forecasters say snow will expand back across the area and persist through the late morning hours, leaving an additional 1 to 2 inches behind. Travel on area roads will remain slick and hazardous through Thursday morning as temperatures fall below freezing.

Depending on where you live in southeast Michigan, you either had a lot or a little snow. The National Weather Service says 10 inches of snow was reported in Lapeer, 9 inches was reported in Clarkston and near Brighton and Howell, 8 inches was reported in Wixom, and 4 to 5 inches was reported in Farmington Hills and Livonia. At Metro Airport in Romulus, only 2.5 inches was reported.

Several communities have declared snow emergencies, including: Auburn Hills, Birmingham, Bloomfield Township, Berkley, Dearborn Heights, Farmington, Garden City, Livonia, Madison Heights, Oak Park, Rochester, Royal Oak, Shelby Township, South Lyon, Taylor and Warren. If cars and trucks aren't moved off the streets, owners could be ticketed.

State offices in 51 counties are also shut down Thursday because of the weather, and Michigan lawmakers have canceled voting and committee hearings in Lansing. Offices are scheduled to re-open Friday.

Elsewhere around the state, record snowfall was reported in Grand Rapids -- 7.3 inches fell Wednesday, breaking the old record of 6.8 inches in 1990. In Lansing, a 135 year record was tied as 7 inches of snow was reported.
