Hearings Held For 152 People Who Skipped Jury Duty In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - Dozens of metro Detroiters are facing some trouble with the law after skipping out on jury duty.

Officials with the 36th District Court say 152 people failed to show up for jury duty after being summoned at least twice, so the court ordered them to court for a show cause hearing to explain why they should not be held in contempt.

On Wednesday, WWJ Newsradio 950's Stephanie Davis reports some cases were adjourned, others were re-scheduled and some people were ordered to serve on a jury. More hearings are scheduled Thursday.

Chief Judge Nancy Blount says jury duty is an important civic responsibility that should not be taken lightly, and those not responding to the summons could face serious consequences."

In addition to being held in contempt of court, offenders could also be fined or incarcerated.
