Hamtramck In Trouble In Tax Dispute With Detroit
Hamtramck City Leaders pleaded with Detroit City Council Tuesday for help in a dispute with Detroit over tax revenue from the General Motors Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly Plant.
Hamtramck City Manager William Cooper said Detroit claims it overpaid Hamtramck more than $5 million, and so Detroit is now withholding all payment from the plant to Hamtramck.
"We understand that if they did over-collect and therefore overpaid us, okay. But, why not work with us in order to help us work out a repayment plan that won't completely destroy the city of Hamtramck," Cooper said.
Without some help from Detroit on this, "We will be broke, and unable to pay our bills," he said.
Cooper said Hamtramck will be forced into receivership by January if a repayment agreement is not worked out with Detroit.
