Fundraising Band Dealing With Copy-Cat Scammers

DETROIT (WWJ) - Copying may be the sincerest form of flattery. But not in this case. The Martin Luther King High School band, which is trying to raise money for trips around the world, is selling water for $1-a-bottle, and M&M candy.

According to band leader Victoria Miller, on the web site ClickonDetroit.com, some scammers are using the band's good name to make some easy money.

Miller says the non-students aren't selling anything; they're just begging for donations outside shops along Nine Mile and Greenfield roads, pretending to be members of the school's marching band.

To help separate the real band members from the scammers, the ML King band members will be carrying signs and wearing bright yellow shirts, with parents on-site.
