Fired Police Chief Accused Of Pocketing Inspection Fees

SHELBY, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - The ex-police chief of a western Michigan village has been charged with embezzlement in connection with salvage vehicle inspections.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette's office says 62-year-old Robert Wilson was arraigned this week in Oceana County. Wilson also is charged with five counts of filing a false certification.

A vehicle with a salvage title cannot receive a license plate or be used on public roads until it is recertified. Inspections by state law enforcement officers can cost up to $100.

Schuette's office says Village of Shelby officials were not informed that Wilson was collecting inspection fees. Shelby is located northwest of Grand Rapids.

Wilson was terminated as police chief as a result of the investigation. His next court appearance is Aug. 22.
