Crews respond to electrical fire at Maccabees Building on Wayne State's campus
Detroit fire crews are responding to an electrical fire at the historic Maccabees Building on Wayne State University's campus on Wednesday afternoon.
Wayne State issued an alert at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday asking students to avoid the area due to a fire at the Maccabees Building, located at 5057 Woodward Avenue.
Wayne State Chief of Police Anthony Holt says the electrical fire began on the 11th floor on a platform outside of the building, and that an air handling unit is believed to have caught on fire.
Holt says the fire caused mostly water damage, which is contained on the ninth, 10th and 11th floors. No classrooms are located in the building.
City officials say there are no injuries and that the fire is under control.
The building will remain closed as crews assess the damage.
Located in Midtown, the Maccabees Building was designed by Albert Kahn and completed in 1927. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Wayne State purchased the building in 2002.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
