Fermi Security Officer Shoots Self In Foot

FRENCHTOWN TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Federal regulators are investigating an accidental shooting involving a security officer at Michigan's Fermi 2 nuclear power plant.

A U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission report released Friday says the officer shot himself in the foot Thursday afternoon when his gun discharged.

DTE Energy Co. spokesman Scott Simons says the officer was unloading his gun at the end of his shift when it fired. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and was later released. No other injuries were reported.

The power plant is in Monroe County's Frenchtown Township, about 35 miles southwest of Detroit. It is owned and operated by DTE Energy.
