NEF To Present Best Of 2012 Awards: The Ann Arbor New Enterprise Forum's February meeting celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit with awards to the NEF Entrepreneur of the Year and to Showcase Presenters who were outstanding in their presentations, technology, or business model. The event begins with networking at 5 p.m. and the program at 5:45 p.m. at the Holiday Inn North Campus, 3600 Plymouth Road at US-2 in Ann Arbor. It's free to NEF members, $20 for nonmembers and $5 for students. The NEF Entrepreneur of the Year is Daniel R. Rhodes of Compendia Bioscience. Rhodes co-founded Compendia with Arul Chinnaiyan in 2006 with the goal of building a commercial version of Oncomine, the company's product that aggregates and analyzes the world's growing collection of published genomic oncology data, and provides practical, actionable views on the data and results. Their ensuing informatics products and services have been so successful that in 2010, Compendia changed its mission -- to curing cancer. Compendia was acquired by Life Technologies (Nasdaq:LIFE) of Carlsbad, Calif. in October 2012. The winner of the Entrepreneur Awards for best presentation, best technology and best business model will be selected from the group of companies who presented at our monthly meetings; names stay secret until showtime. Companies in the running are Ric Olson of Gantec, Inc., Christine Gibbons of Histosonics, Jon Baugh of Patient Provider Communications, Susan Sprentall of SurClean, Hal Zaima of Sterilogy, Rboert Kennedy of Vestaron, Erik Kulstad of Advanced Cooling Therapies, David Stout and Larry LaFranchi of LogiCoul (Clean Energy Innovations), and Ryan Vaughn of Varsity News Networks. Be in the audience to see who gets the honors and how these firms have grown this year. This month's Showcase Presentation will come from ONL Therapeutics, an Ann Arbor-based spin-out from the UM Kellogg Eye Institute, an ophthalmic therapeutics development firm focused on preventing vision loss due to retinal diseases. ONL is currently working on a drug for treatment of retinal detachment; the new technology, which also could potentially prevent post-combat blindness in soldiers, has caught the attention of the United States Department of Defense. ONL co-founders are Dr. David Zacks (the inventor of the technology and an associate professor of ophthalmology at UM) and Dr. Jeffery Jamison. More at
