ESD Honors Young Engineers
The Engineering Society of Detroit as selected three outstanding individuals out of dozens of applicants to receive the 2011 Outstanding Young Engineer of the Year, Outstanding Student Engineer of the Year and Outstanding High School Student of the Year Awards.
Hailing from Novi, Farmington Hills and Iron Mountain, these individuals exemplify commitment to their fields; dedication to their communities and outstanding academic achievements. All three will be honored Thursday, June 23 at the ESD Annual Awards Dinner at the Book Cadillac in Detroit.
This year's Outstanding Young Engineer of the Year Award will be awarded to Shani Allison. A resident of Novi, Allison works as a Program Management Analyst for Ford Motor Co. where she oversees the planning and executing of complex systems and/or projects related to a global small SUV program.
Her community involvement includes serving on ESD's Young Engineer Council; volunteering for the Michigan Regional Future City Competition; facilitating cross-cultural networking events, and much more.
The Outstanding Student Engineer of the Year Award will be given to Casey Kick. A resident of Iron Mountain, Mich, Kick is a senior at Western Michigan University majoring in Paper Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Imaging. While at WMU, Kick has held various internships and co-op positions, including participating in the WMU Engineering Study Abroad Program in China.
The 2011 Outstanding High School Student of the Year Award will be given to Makayla McCoskey, a student at North Farmington High School in Farmington Hills. In addition to maintaining a 4.0 GPA every trimester in high school and earning a perfect score of 36 on the ACT Exam, she was active in numerous school activities including theater, choir, student government and more.
McCoskey's academic honors and awards include being a United States Presidential Scholar Nominee, a National Merit Finalist, and the recipient of the University of Michigan Regents Merit Scholarship.
She will be attending the University of Michigan in the fall, where she plans to pursue studies in cell and molecular biology and biomedical engineering.
