Elevated Lead Found In Fountains At 2 Wayne State University Buildings
DETROIT (AP) - Officials say elevated lead levels have been found in drinking fountains at two Wayne State University buildings.
The Detroit school says Friday in a statement on its website the fountains are in the College of Education Building and the Meyer L. Prentis/Karmanos Cancer Institute building. The school says affected fountains are being shut off until the problem is fixed.
The school says water going into the buildings tested normal. Lead can leach into water at old fixtures or pipes joined by lead solder.
Wayne State is offering free blood tests to those who use the buildings if they're concerned. The school says 11 buildings were tested or partially tested and other drinking sites came back normal.
