Around here the jokes went more like this: "So the Bills and Jets need to use Ford Field -- how many times does Detroit have to bail out the NFL?"
This is, after all, the place in 2010 the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants played when the Metrodome roof collapsed.
But it also didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out people would use this as an opportunity to make jokes at Detroit's expense. (I said 'expense,' and the city's bankrupt -- hilarious, right?)
It didn't take long for CBS Sports radio host Doug Gottlieb to release this gem:
And he immediately got backlash on Twitter.
So how did Gottlieb choose to respond?
Ouch! Oh, no, he didn't. He just added fuel to the fire! (We burn things in Detroit, too, don't we? How did he miss that joke?)
The only problem was this list was from 2013.
Here's an excerpt from that article:
What is encouraging is the violent crime rate in the Motor City actually declined last year, despite crushing financial woes that drove Detroit into the biggest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.
As someone who's there all the time, I'm pretty sure Ford Field is a safe place. When I leave the field hours after the game has finished and walk around downtown to get to my car, I've never worried about being "safe" in Detroit.
Mr. Gottlieb should come take a tour of the city. Maybe he would rethink his comments.
