Doctor Confirms Stress Fractures; Jose Iglesias Out At Least Four Months

CBS DETROIT - The new and improved infield of the Detroit Tigers has officially lost its centerpiece.

Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias, known for his range, quickness and flashy plays, had told reporters earlier he has stress fractures in both his shins, and the team announced Thursday that Dr. Thomas Clanton in Colorado confirmed that condition.

After reviewing a bone scan and MRI of Iglesias, Clanton also examined a CT scan, which indeed showed bilateral tibial stress fractures.

For the next four to six months, Iglesias will engage in only non-weight bearing conditioning, including swimming, biking and upper body strengthening. After four months, Iglesias will be reevaluated.

The Tigers traded away Avisail Garcia for Iglesias last season. They needed a shortstop because Jhonny Peralta would soon be suspended for his role in the Biogenesis scandal. Iglesias hit .259 for Detroit in 2013.

Last season the infield consisted of Miguel Cabrera at third, Peralta or Iglesias at short, Omar Infante at second and Prince Fielder at third. This season, Nick Castellanos plays third, Iglesias was supposed to be at short, Ian Kinsler will be at second and Cabrera will be back at first, the position he played before moving to third to accommodate Fielder.

The changes in the infield were expected to make the Tigers much stronger defensively, but the subtraction of Iglesias could lessen the improvement significantly.
