Detroit Tigers Place Magglio Ordonez On The 15-Day DL
DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers announced Friday the club has placed outfielder Magglio Ordonez on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 11 with right ankle weakness. Additionally, the Tigers will purchase the contract of outfielder Andy Dirks from Triple A Toledo upon his arrival to Detroit to take Ordonez's spot on the club's 25-man roster.
Ordonez is hitting .172 (17x99) with three doubles, a home run and five RBI in 26 games with the Tigers this season. He underwent a surgical procedure to stabilize a right ankle fracture on August 25, 2010, a procedure performed by Dr. Phillip Kwong of the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles. Ordonez will be referred back to Dr. Kwong for further testing and evaluation.
Dirks is batting .328 (43x131) with 25 runs scored, six doubles, a triple, six home runs, 20 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 34 games with Toledo in 2011. He departs Toledo tied for second in the International League with 43 hits, while he is tied for third with 25 runs scored and 10 stolen bases and tied for seventh with a .328 batting average.
Dirks will wear uniform number 12 when his contract is purchased by the Tigers from Toledo following his arrival to Detroit.
