Detroit Teachers Plan Protest At Court Hearing On Sick-out

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A judge plans to hear arguments in a lawsuit aimed at stopping a sick-out by Detroit teachers, absences that have closed schools and kept thousands of students at home at times over the past two weeks.

Before the court hearing Monday, a rally is planned outside the State of Michigan building in Detroit. Steve Conn, an activist among the teachers, says the governor and the Detroit district's emergency manager should be put on trial, not teachers.

Teachers are upset over pay, class sizes, building conditions and Gov. Rick Snyder's plan to overhaul the district.

Emergency manager Darnell Earley says students miss instruction as well as food when schools are closed. There are about 100 public schools and 46,000 students.
