Detroit Ranked Among Worst Cities In Country For Valentine's Day, And The Reason May Surprise You

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit's an easy dumping ground for bad press and it appears the city has fallen on Cupid's arrow this Valentine's Day as well.

According to the online site WalletHub Detroit ranks almost dead last, 99 out of 100 cities, in the U.S. for you, your sweetie and your wallet to reside on the romantic holiday.

They've crunched the numbers and the weather forecast (yeah, weather was a factor) and Detroit fell just below Cleveland (98) and just above the worst Hialeah, Florida (100).

Apparently, it's not only expensive to eat here, it's also difficult to find a fine jewelry store to buy your beloved a bedazzled jewel.

On a more encouraging note; Assistant Professor of Marketing in the Broad College of Business at Michigan State University, Ayalla A. Ruvio says experience often trumps spending as far as overall enjoyment of the day.

Even when people are feeling more prosperous -- the biggest play may mean you spend more time planning a romantic dinner or creative date for your love.

Ruvio shared a few tips on for celebrating Valentine's Day on a budget.

"My tip would be to spend it in a way that enables you to experience and truly celebrate your love and relationship. You don't have to go to a fancy and expensive restaurant. Surprise her/him with a romantic home cooked dinner for two. Make the moment last. Not the dollar," she says.

And she notes a post-Valentine's Day bonus ... taking advantage of day-after deals like expensive chocolates, designer jewelry and perfumes.

Valentine's Day falls on a Sunday this year.
