DPS Police Officer Injured In School Break-In

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit Public Schools police officer was injured while attempting an arrest.

Police said Officer John Greene was trying to apprehend one of three men caught breaking into the vacant Paul Robeson Academy on Linwood and Fenkell in Detroit Tuesday night when he was slashed several times with a sharp metal object.

Detroit Public Schools Police Chief Roderick Grimes said Greene, a six-year veteran of the force, was wearing protective chest gear.

"Officer Greene, fortunately, is OK.  He was treated at Henry Ford Hospital. He was released. He's home resting at this current time," said Grimes."I can't say enough about what our officers do. They go into these buildings every night searching out those who would want to steal from the district."

Grimes spoke also about the suspects.

"We do know that he has a past criminal history. We know that at least one of those charges from the past is a felony. We know that at least one of the other two has a criminal record," said Grimes.

All three suspects are being held in police custody.
