Detroit Music Hall Unveils Performance Schedule

DETROIT (WWJ) - Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts is rolling out their 2011-2012 performance schedule, with a deftly balanced menu of dance, children's programming and special events that make the Music Hall and Jazz Café Detroit's treasured jewel of diverse cultural entertainment.

This year's centerpiece of the season is a big one as the Music Hall is thrilled to present the Tony Award-winning Musical, "FELA!" for a run in February, 2012. This visual evocation of the musical and political life of famed Nigerian singer and musician, Fela Kuti, will combine the best of the London and New York casts for an experience that will surely spice things up for winter theatre goers.

The eclectic dance program includes, Kings of Salsa, The National Acrobats of the People's Republic of China, Great Independent Ballet with The Moscow Festival Ballet and what may prove to be the biggest sensation since Riverdance, The Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre.

Complexions Contemporary Ballet returns to it's second home, May 5-6 2012, with an always refreshing and envelope-pushing program that synthesizes contemporary dance and unique musical choices into something extraordinary and innovative.

Children's programming is nowhere near short supply, with the iconic Children's duo "The Tortoise And The Hare," February 12, in their spellbinding electroluminescent presentation. Speaking of which, world-class puppeteer John Tartaglia's "Imaginocean" utilizes black light to evoke an underwater adventure. Older kids will enjoy the Chicago Children's Theatre production of "The Hundred Dresses," in which details an imaginative young girl's struggle to fit in with her unique classmates.

And then there's Jazz and culturally diverse special events that are Music Hall's stock in trade. Performances feature the Lionel Hampton Tribute, George Benson's Acoustical Trio and Carl Palmer, who returns to the intimate Jazz Café  playing two shows with his trio.
