Detroit Man Gets Jail Time For Molesting Coma Patient

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit man who was convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in a coma will spend a year in jail.

Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Carole Youngblood also sentenced 49-year-old Cornell Lowman to three years probation and his name will be put on the sex offender registry.

Prosecutors said Lowman was visiting another person at a nursing home on East Grand Boulevard when he went into the room of a 65-year-old female coma patient and sexually assaulted her.

The incident was observed by a witness, who immediately contacted the police. He was arrested at the scene.

"The alleged behavior in this case is just not something you want to think about when your loved one is in a nursing home," said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy in a statement, when the incident occurred in April. "In this case people in the home acted swiftly and appropriately in reporting it right away," she said.

Prosecutors wanted Lowman jailed for another year for being a habitual offender, but the judge declined.
