Detroit Kicks-Off Minority Health Month, Gets Students Involved

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion (DHWP) will kick off Minority Health Month, nationally observed in April, with a Health and Wellness Workshop for 11th and 12th graders at Detroit Central High School on April 1.

DHWP's Office of Health Outreach, Promotion and Education (HOPE) will introduce the students to physical fitness activities such as fencing, tai chi, yoga and zumba. Each activity will be offered in a breakout session during the program.

DHWP's Office of Nutrition Services will also share the USDA-approved food guide that was unveiled in January. The new food guide is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' New Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which is aimed at combating nationwide health issues such as childhood obesity.

"In order to effectively fight obesity, diabetes and potential heart disease in our young people, we need to engage them with fresh and fun opportunities that encourage healthier lifestyles choices," Dr. Yvonne E. Anthony, DHWP Director and Public Health Officer, said in a release. "Together, we can keep them focused on their eating habits and teach them new ways to stay and get fit."

At the end of the program, there will be a 3-on-3 basketball tournament with the participating students. Funding for the project was provided through a grant from the Michigan Department of Community Health/ Health Disparities Reduction-Minority Health Section.

This event will serve as a prelude to the upcoming National Public Health Week observed April 4-8. During National Public Health Week, DHWP will engage the entire community with various health activities at Herman Kiefer Health Complex, recreation centers and community health centers throughout the city.

Some highlighted activities include cooking demonstrations, daily health screenings, a Hustle for Health dance session on Monday, April 4, and a Walk Against Obesity on Friday, April 8.
