Cruise Ship That Ran Aground In Detroit River Cleared To Continue Trip
DETROIT (WWJ) - The cruise ship that ran aground in the Detroit River Saturday night may leave for Cleveland sometime Sunday. Coast Guard-Detroit spokesman, Lt. Justin Westmiller, says a tugboat towed the Yorktown back to the Rennaisance Center overnight and they've cleared it to head to Cleveland.
He says they are investigating and that includes drug and alcohol testing of the bridge crew.
"Normally, it'll be the bridge crew that deals with ... the drug and alcohol testing and we'll also take a look at the engineering system on there and things like that - just to see if there are any mechanical failures or anything like that that may have caused it to ground," said Westmiller.
How are the 95 passengers handling the unexpected stop?
"They were fine , they were in their cabins , or, you know, at the restaurant or whatever they were gonna do on their cruise," Westmiller said.
Westmiller says the ship plans to conduct dive operations to make sure the hull wasn't damaged before it heads to Cleveland and then Quebec City.
