Crews Battle SW Detroit Warehouse Fire

Detroit firefighters were busy Thursday morning trying to get the upper hand on a fire at an abandoned warehouse in southwest Detroit.

WWJ's Ron Dewey says the fire was reported around 3 a.m. at Fort St. and Miller St., with flames somewhat visible from the I-75 Rouge River bridge.

The warehouse is part of what used to be the complex where Synergy foods was housed.  In recent times, it's been an empty cinderblock  and steel girder shell.

Detroit firefighters were staying out of the building, given the dangers of collapsing material.  As Ron was speaking with the fire chief on the scene, part of the roof collapsed as they looked on.

The thick smoke at the scene is the result of the warehouse's tar paper roof, not tires as first thought.

Two tower trucks were pouring water on top of the warehouse, expecting to have the fire out by late Thursday morning.
