Comcast Suffers Internet Outage

Comcast internet service went down about 8:30 Sunday night in parts of Michigan, as well as Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota, according to several media reports.

A Comcast spokesman posting on Twitter said service was restored about 1 a.m. Monday.

There's no word yet on how many customers were affected.

There are ways for people proficient with computers to work around these outages, affecting so called DNS servers. They're the basic switchboard your computer uses to connect to the Internet. If your Internet service provider's DNS is down -- as was the case for Comcast Sunday night -- you can change to a different one.

For instructions on changing to Google Public DNS, visit http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html. For instructions on moving to DNS servers called Open DNS, visit http://www.opendns.com/support/article/17.

Last week, Comcast suffered a similar outage in the Northeast states.
