College Stores Recognize Students For Being Socially Responsible

DETROIT (WWJ) - College students across North America will be recognized by college stores Oct. 6 for their volunteerism during the first annual National Student Day.

National Student Day, sponsored by the National Association of College Stores (NACS), is a day dedicated to celebrating and promoting social responsibility by college students.

On Oct. 6, college stores throughout the United States and Canada will host an array of events in their stores to celebrate and promote social responsibility. These events will consist of giveaways, parties, contests and more.

"For years, college students have been volunteering across their campus community and beyond," NACS Director of Public Relations, Charles Schmidt, said in a release. "From cleaning up a local park to serving as a Big Brother or Big Sister, they have taken time out of their busy schedules to perform selfless acts without seeking recognition. We felt it was about time to applaud these students for their efforts, which is why we came up with National Student Day."

NACS will also award students who demonstrate their volunteerism. Students can also submit their story or video of social responsibility online. Stories will be voted on by their peers and the 10 most popular will win prizes ranging from a $3,000 scholarship to and iPad.

Some universities in the Metro area participating in National Student Day included the University of Michigan in Dearborn and Ann Arbor, University of Detroit Mercy and Wayne State University.
