Coast Guard Rescues Boater Who Tried To Swim Lake Superior After Boat Capsized

MUNISING, Mich. (AP/WWJ) — The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a boater who tried to swim to shore in Lake Superior after a small sailboat capsized and also helped round up roughly 30 empty kayaks that were adrift in the lake.

Wednesday's rescue along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan's Upper Peninsula followed storms that hit the area this week.

The Coast Guard says a group had to abandon their kayaks due to increasing winds and waves. Coast Guard crews arrived on the scene to aid with search efforts and ensure that no one was missing. A several hours of searching everyone was safely found.

While conducting the search by air and helicopter, the Coast Guard also responded to a report of an overturned sailboat. The boater and the boat were safely taken to shore.

There are warnings in the Upper Peninsula after major storms earlier this week.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is asking boaters to be aware of debris floating in Lake Superior. At least 85 boats were damaged during storms earlier this week.
